Caldwell takes maiden FIA F3 victory in ‘crazy race’

After a difficult rookie season in FIA Formula 3 with Trident, the time has come to shine for Olli Caldwell. In Barcelona the 18-year-old bagged his first win in the series.

A years worth of experience and a seat in a top team can make a huge difference, and that very much applies to Olli Caldwell. His win in Race 2 seems like a breakthrough, but the British driver thinks something else is even more important than winning: consistency.

“Obviously, I’m over the moon with the result, from P7 to P1. It was a crazy race with some carnage, but it shows that you have to be consistent to get the points. Today (Saturday) was great, but if you focus on the win you’d be stuck there. I focus on what I did well and the mistakes I made because I definitely made some, and by doing so I will be able to maximise tomorrow’s (Sunday) race and the ones in the future.”

“To keep the chance of scoring big results as high as possible, Caldwell knows he has to work on his qualifying. “A really good weekend, we scored a lot of points and it was great to get a win, plus P4 and P5. There is still something to work on, we need to maximise qualifying and we’ll look at that in the weekend debrief. Overall I’m really happy with the weekend, but there’s a lot to learn and improve on. I made some mistakes, that’s what I need to learn for the next one.”

Caldwell has all the time in the world to analyse all the data he wants, next round is only June 26 – 27 at Paul Ricard, so more than a month and a half away.
