The 2022 GB3 Championship doesn’t get underway until April, but some teams have already announced part of their new driver line ups for this season. One of those teams is Hillspeed, who recently announced that Nick Gilkes would take a seat in the team. We caught up with him to discuss the move, his sim racing and what’s to come in 2022.

Nick Gilkes is moving to the UK from Canada ahead of the 2022 GB3 Championship but had success in his debut season in cars last year, winning the Toyo Tires Ontario F1600 and Canadian F1600 Championships. 

He also finished the season as ‘Rookie of the Year’ and travelled to the UK last summer to compete in the Formula Ford Festival and Walter Hayes Trophy.

His career in motorsport started in karting after his family moved back to Canada from Barbados, winning the 2016 Goodwood Kartways Novice Club title and the Pfaff Kartsport Cup crown in 2018. The following year he finished second in the US Grand Nationals in Indiana and won the KartStars Canada Briggs Junior title along with the Goodwood Kartways Junior Championship in 2020. 

You may also recognise his surname because his sister Megan Gilkes, took part in 2019 W Series and is the youngest race winner in the series. 

Gilkes has already worked with the team after testing last season’s car at Silverstone in November and showed a lot of promise and will be hoping to impress once again when the GB3 Championship returns on the 16^th April.
